Colorado’s second-largest city by population (414,000-plus) and largest city by area (186.1 square miles), Colorado Springs sits at the base of world-famous Pike’s Peak on the dramatic eastern edge of the Colorado Rockies. Because of its unique location and altitude, Colorado Springs enjoys relatively mild winters and only occasional major snowfalls, most of which quickly melt away. Summers tend to be mild and dry. The area is known for its unusually high lightning activity, which is why late 19th century inventor Nicola Tesla chose the city to study electricity.
Today, Colorado Springs’ economy is driven by the U.S. military, high-tech manufacturing and tourism, in that order. Stability in military spending has kept local unemployment significantly below the national average.
Although Colorado Springs has no major sports franchises, it is the national headquarters of the U.S. Olympic Committee as well as the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Long associated with figure skating, the city is the home of the World Figure Skating Museum and Hall of Fame as well as the Broadmoor Skating Club.
The city has an extensive highway system and also provides mass transit through Mountain Metropolitan Transit (Metro) and Front Range Express (FRX), which makes runs between Colorado Springs and Denver.
