More About Colorado Springs

Colorado’s second-largest city by population (414,000-plus) and largest city by area (186.1 square miles), Colorado Springs sits at the base of world-famous Pike’s Peak on the dramatic eastern edge of the Colorado Rockies.  Known for its mild climate, vibrant economy, good schools, low crime rate and relatively low cost of living, Colorado Springs was named the No.1 Best City by Moneymagazine (2006) and received a similar honor by Outside magazine (2009).

Founded in 1871 as a health retreat, the area got a massive but short-lived economic shot in the arm when gold was discovered on Pike’s Peak.  The resulting Gold Rush lasted for about 10 years, during which Colorado Springs grew from a minor Western settlement into a thriving commercial complex.  Many prospectors became multi-millionaires who then pumped their new-found wealth back into the city, helping to create an infrastructure that exists to this day.  When the Gold Rush was over, Colorado Springs briefly returned to its original role as a health mecca, but the U.S. military saw potential here and in short order created an Army training base, an air base, the Cheyenne Mountain NORAD Air Defense HQ and, last but certainly not least, the United States Air Force Academy.

Because of its unique location and altitude, Colorado Springs enjoys relatively mild winters and only occasional major snowfalls, most of which quickly melt away.  Summers tend to be mild and dry.  The area is known for its unusually high lightning activity, which is why late 19^th century inventor Nicola Tesla chose the city to study electricity.

Today, Colorado Springs’ economy is driven by the U.S. military, high-tech manufacturing and tourism, in that order.  Stability in military spending has kept local unemployment significantly below the national average.

Although Colorado Springs has no major sports franchises, it is the national headquarters of the U.S. Olympic Committee as well as the U.S. Olympic Training Center.  Long associated with figure skating, the city is the home of the World Figure Skating Museum and Hall of Fame as well as the Broadmoor Skating Club.

The city has an extensive highway system and also provides mass transit through Mountain Metropolitan Transit (Metro) and Front Range Express (FRX), which makes runs between Colorado Springs and Denver.
